The certification examines how we operate across responsible sourcing, human and labour rights, business ethics, anti-money laundering, environmental management and transparent product disclosure. It provides our partners with additional assurance that these commitments are supported by documented policies, due-diligence procedures and accountable business practices.
The journey towards a lower-impact diamond begins at its source. Approximately 95% of Botswanamark’s estimated greenhouse-gas footprint occurs upstream, within the Scope 3 emissions associated with mining. Reducing emissions at the mine is therefore where the greatest environmental progress can be made.
Debswana has set an ambition to make its operations carbon neutral by 2030. Its Journey to Zero is focused on transitioning to alternative fuels, decarbonising its electricity supply and developing carbon-recovery initiatives. The current mining footprint is estimated at approximately 160 kg CO2e for every carat of rough diamond recovered. As Debswana’s transition progresses, this figure will decrease to zero.
Traceability enables us to connect every carat to the environmental performance of its source and to follow that performance as it improves.
DISCOVER DEBSWANAAlthough mining represents approximately 95% of Botswanamark’s estimated greenhouse-gas footprint, our responsibility does not end at the mine. We actively manage the environmental impact of our own operations and the wider journey of every Botswanamark diamond.
Our Antwerp headquarters is powered by renewable electricity, reducing the emissions associated with our day-to-day operations. Botswanamark diamonds are cut and polished in factories certified as carbon neutral. These manufacturing partners combine renewable energy with carbon offsetting to address the residual emissions that cannot yet be eliminated, ensuring that the cutting and polishing stage is managed on a carbon-neutral basis.
Our approach is straightforward: reduce emissions wherever possible, use renewable energy wherever available and offset only those emissions that remain. From our offices and manufacturing partners to the materials in which our diamonds are presented, every decision is part of our commitment to lowering our footprint.
Botswanamark calculates the estimated mining emissions associated with the diamonds we sell and supports a local improved-cookstove initiative in the Okavango Delta in response to this footprint.
In partnership with Ecoexist Trust, we fund the distribution of Zama Zama stoves to households in communities that share their landscape with elephants. Compared with traditional open fires, the insulated gasifying design burns wood and other biomass more efficiently, reducing the amount of fuel required and helping to lower emissions and smoke.
Based on project estimates, each stove can avoid approximately four tonnes of CO2e annually. The stoves can use small branches, twigs and locally available waste biomass, reducing the need for larger logs and easing pressure on local wood resources.
We do not present these reductions as eliminating the impact of mining itself. We measure and disclose that impact while supporting practical, locally rooted climate action that also benefits communities in Botswana—the country where every Botswanamark diamond begins its journey.
